Regional Presence
The crime has taken root and expanded its networks in Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Cambodia but is increasingly becoming integrated and interlinked across the region and around the world.
Impact on Kenyan Citizens
Since 2022
Hundreds of Kenyans have been trafficked to Myanmar and Lao PDR to engage in scamming jobs for Chinese mafia networks after being duped to apply for advertised jobs purported to be in Thailand.
Tragic Consequences: Some victims have suffered physical and mental trauma after being tortured, maimed and even killed for failing to deliver clients. One Kenyan victim died in 2022 after a botched operation on her stomach for unknown reasons.
Economic Impact
Families and businesses have lost millions of dollars. The industry is growing rapidly and poses a serious threat to regional and global security.
Hidden Nature
Due to its concealed nature and well-organized networks, it is likely to continue growing rapidly and remain as an increasingly underreported crime.
Embassy Response & Rescue Efforts
Rescue Operations
The Kenya Embassy, working with various partners in Thailand, Kenya, Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Cambodia has successfully rescued and repatriated over 400 Kenyans and other Africans back home.
Awareness Campaigns
The Embassy has increased awareness in Kenya through various platforms including electronic and social media, warning Kenyans against travelling to Myanmar and Lao PDR using Thailand as a transit country.
Modus Operandi
Criminal Networks
Deceptive Recruitment: The mafia networks usually dupe the victims by advertising fake jobs purporting to be in Thailand.
Local Networks: The mafia has established networks in Kenya and other African countries using locals as recruitment agents.
Target Locations: Chinese mafia cartels operating in Myanmar and the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Lao PDR and Cambodia.
Ongoing Threat: Unfortunately, many Kenyans continue to fall victim to these criminal enterprises.
Drug Trafficking
Regional Drug Hub
Besides human trafficking, South East Asia has also become a major hub for illegal drug production and a prime destination for illegal drugs from South America, using Kenyans as mules.
Multilateral Cooperation
International Cooperation
Like climate change, human trafficking requires active multilateral cooperation. The Kenya Embassy has been in the forefront in calling for the strengthening of interventions and capacities of stakeholders to deal with this growing criminal enterprise.
Partnership Approach
Working collaboratively with governments, international organizations, and civil society to combat transnational crimes.
Capacity Building
Strengthening interventions and capacities of stakeholders to address these growing criminal enterprises effectively.
